The Ohio mine, located near Michigamme in Baraga County, Michigan, is a historic open-pit and underground iron mine situated within the western portion of the Marquette Iron Range. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within the Paleoproterozoic-aged Negaunee Iron Formation, which consists of complexly folded and faulted banded iron formations containing alternating layers of chert and iron oxides. Hydrothermal fluids circulating through structural fractures secondary-enriched the deposit, leaching silica and concentrating the primary iron minerals into high-grade soft ore bodies of hematite and goethite. The mine was first opened in 1883 by the Ohio Mining Company, which conducted sporadic open-pit operations and developed an underground shaft to exploit the ore body. Due to challenging market conditions and fluctuating ore quality, operations were highly intermittent, passing through various operators including the Buffalo Mining Company before all formal iron ore extraction permanently ceased at the property around 1925.
