Gold

specimen number:
2273001

location:
Emperor Mine, Vatukoula, Ba, Viti Levu, Fiji

description:
Bright crystal gold wires to almost 0.5 cm in size across the front of matrix. In great condition, an excellent locality example for the species.

The Emperor gold mine, situated at Vatukoula on the northern coast of Viti Levu, Fiji, was a major underground and open-cut mining operation that ranked as one of the longest-running volcanic-hosted precious metal mines in the South Pacific. Geologically, the deposit is a classic example of an alkaline epithermal gold system hosted within the Pliocene-age Tavua Caldera, a large collapsed volcanic structure composed primarily of basaltic lava flows and shoshonitic tuffs. Hydrothermal fluids channeled along steep normal faults and low-angle structural shatter zones precipitated mineralization rich in gold-silver tellurides, most notably sylvanite, krennerite, and calaverite, alongside native gold, auriferous pyrite, quartz, and carbonate minerals. Historically, the deposit was discovered in 1932 by prospector Bill Borthwick, triggering a major gold rush that led to the commencement of large-scale commercial milling and underground extraction by Emperor Gold Mining Company Limited in 1935. The mine operated nearly continuously for over seven decades under various international consortia, serving as a cornerstone of the Fijian economy until escalating operational costs and declining grades led to a major closure in 2006, followed by several intermittent, localized restructuring and underground reclamation phases managed by modern mining groups through 2026.
