Lake Gilles, situated on the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia within an arid to semi-arid endorheic basin, is a natural ephemeral salt lake rather than an active industrial mining operation, though surrounding pastoral leases like Corunna Station are well known for geological collecting. Geologically, the lake environment consists of Quaternary evaporite sequences where seasonal saline groundwater discharge and intense evaporation drive the precipitation of salts and sulfates. The gypsum crystals found here typically form within the lacustrine clays and playa sediments, frequently developing sharp, highly transparent, gemmier crystal habits including distinct swallowtail or fishtail twins with excellent luster and well-defined internal faces.
