Geologically, the area is part of the Zechstein Basin, where large evaporite formations accumulated during the Late Permian period as ancient shallow seas repeatedly evaporated, leaving behind thick layers of halite, carnallite, and sylvite. Mining operations began in the late 19th century, with the sinking of the first potash shafts around 1899, and the town quickly developed into a major center for German fertilizer production and salt extraction. The mines operated through various political eras of the 20th century before production gradually wound down, concluding industrial extraction in the unified post-war era, though the legacy of the local potash industry remains deeply tied to the region's industrial heritage.
