description: Gyrolite is a hydrous calcium silicate mineral commonly found as a secondary phase in amygdaloidal cavities of basaltic and volcanic rocks. First described in 1851 from the Isle of Skye in Scotland, its name is derived from Greek words referring to its characteristic spherical or rounded crystal habit. Geologically, gyrolite typically forms during the late stages of hydrothermal activity or low-temperature alteration within basic igneous rocks. Mineralogically, it crystallizes in the triclinic system and is widely recognized for forming delicate, pearl-white to yellowish spherical aggregates, radiating rosettes, or tabular crystal plates, frequently associated with zeolites, apophyllite, and quartz in classic basalt quarries worldwide.
Greenish crystal groupings of gyrolite to 1.0 cm in diameter covering the front of matrix with white silky acicular crystal clusters of okenite. In great condition, this is a wonderful large cabinet example for the species.
