Hardystonite with Willemite

specimen number:
2282090

location:
Franklin, Sussex Co., New Jersey, USA

description:
Rich masses of harystonite with willemite.

The Franklin mine, situated at Franklin in Sussex County, New Jersey, is one of the most mineralogically complex ore deposits on Earth, famous for its unique zinc-iron-manganese mineralization. Geologically, the ore body is an interconnected, trough-shaped lens hosted within the Mesoproterozoic-aged Franklin Marble, which underwent intense, high-grade granulite-facies metamorphism and deformation during the Grenville orogeny. Unlike typical sulfide-dominated zinc deposits, the primary ore minerals here consist of an unusual assemblage of franklinite, willemite, and zincite, which formed through the metamorphism of pre-existing sedimentary or volcanogenic metal oxides and carbonates. Shallow mining and charcoal-fused smelting began at the site during the mid-eighteenth century under local landowners, but large-scale industrial extraction only flourished in the late nineteenth century after the consolidation of competing claims into the New Jersey Zinc Company. Underground operations utilized extensive open-stope and shrink-stope methods to extract millions of tons of ore until the economic limits of the deep synclinal deposit were reached, resulting in the permanent closure of the mine in 1954.

Hardystonite is a rare calcium zinc silicate mineral belonging to the melilite group that is found exclusively within the metamorphosed zinc ore body at Franklin, New Jersey. Geologically, it forms as a primary metamorphic mineral under high-temperature conditions, typically occurring as granular, massive, white to faint pink aggregates closely intergrown with willemite, franklinite, and calcite. While unremarkable in daylight, hardystonite is celebrated for its intense shortwave ultraviolet fluorescence, producing a distinct dull violet to bright purple-blue response that helps identify its structural distribution within the complex Franklin silicate matrix.
