Hematite
specimen number:
2062015
location:
Rabbit Lake mine, Crow Wing County, Minnesota, USA
description: The Rabbit Lake Mine in Crow Wing County, Minnesota was part of the Cuyuna Iron Range and was developed after iron ore was discovered beneath Rabbit Lake during drilling in the early 1940s. A dike was built to separate part of the lake and the water was pumped out so that open pit mining could take place on the exposed lake bed. Operations removed more than 4.6 million tons of iron ore before mining ended in 1973. After closure the area was allowed to refill with water and today the lake is used for recreation.
A choice botryoidal kidney ore hematite specimen in great condition. Especially fine for the locality as good examples from this area were never very common on the market.
