The Sherwood Mine in Iron County, Michigan, was part of the Menominee Iron Range, a major iron producing region developed in the late 19th century. Mining focused on iron rich deposits in Precambrian rocks, primarily hematite ore. The mine was worked through underground operations that followed the ore bodies at depth. Like many mines in the region, Sherwood was active during the late 1800s and early 1900s before production declined as higher grade deposits were exhausted. Today it is part of the historic iron mining heritage of northern Michigan.
