The Cary Mine, located near Hurley in Iron County, Wisconsin, is one of the most prominent and long-lived underground iron mines on the Gogebic Range. Commercial operations began in 1886 and continued for nearly eight decades until its closure in 1964, making it a cornerstone of the regional industrial economy. Geologically, the iron ore deposits are hosted within the Paleoproterozoic-aged Ironwood Iron-Formation, a strongly folded and steeply dipping sedimentary sequence consisting of chemically precipitated iron-rich layers interbedded with slates and quartzites. Hydrothermal and metamorphic processes concentrated these beds into high-grade, hard red-blue hematite and magnetite ores that were extensively extracted via deep underground stoping methods.
