description: Shaft 38, located in the Niederschlema and Bad Schlema district within the Erzgebirge of Saxony, Germany, is part of the extensive Schlema-Alberoda uranium mining field. Historically, the site was developed during the post-World War II era under the Soviet-German SDAG Wismut corporation, becoming a major extraction point within one of the largest uranium mining operations in Europe. Geologically, the deposit is situated within complex metamorphic and gneissic host rocks intersected by multi-stage hydrothermal vein systems. These structural veins formed through complex fluid events that deposited massive and pitchblende-rich uranium ores alongside a diverse suite of associated metallic sulfides, selenides, and carbonate gangue minerals.
A cluster of sharp large scalenohedral calcite crystals, these now completely replaced by hematite. In terrific condition.
