Ibitiara, located in the Bahia state of Brazil, sits within the geological region of the Espinhaco Supergroup, which is primarily composed of Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks like quartzites and conglomerates. Hydrothermal activity in this ancient basin deposited minerals in veins and fractures, creating cavities filled with quartz, including rutilated, smoky, and hematite-included varieties, as well as minerals like anatase and xenotime. Historically, mining in this area began with local prospectors, known as garimpeiros, searching for gold and diamonds in the Chapada Diamantina region before transitioning to the extraction of quartz crystals and other specimens during the twentieth century.
