The mining locality of Botes, situated in the Metaliferi Mountains of Romania, forms part of the historically significant Transylvanian Gold Quadrilateral. Underground mining in the region dates back centuries, intensifying during the Austro-Hungarian era to exploit rich epithermal precious metal veins hosted within Neogene volcanic rocks. Geologically, these volcanic structures and associated hydrothermal systems created complex fault fillings containing native gold, tellurides, and various sulfides. Botes is particularly famous among mineral collectors and researchers as the type locality for hessite, a silver telluride mineral first described from its ores, which typically occurs as embedded grains or crystalline masses associated with native gold and quartz.
