Eysturoy, the second largest island in the Faroe Islands, shares the regional geologic origin of the archipelago, which formed approximately 55 to 60 million years ago during the Paleogene period through massive flood basalt eruptions associated with the opening of the North Atlantic Ocean. Over millions of years, glacial activity carved the dramatic fjords, valleys, and steep basaltic sea cliffs that define the modern landscape. Mineralogically, the island is well known for its rich secondary mineral assemblages, particularly zeolites formed when low-temperature hydrothermal and meteoric fluids percolated through the cavities and vesicles of the layered basalt sequences. Among these minerals, heulandite occurs as distinct tabular or coffin-shaped crystals, frequently found alongside related zeolites like stilbite and chabazite, making the region a classic European locality for basalt-hosted secondary minerals.
