The Mundo Nuevo Mine is located in the Huamachuco District of La Libertad, Peru, situated at high altitudes within the Andes Mountains. Mining in this region has historically focused on the extraction of base metals like copper, lead, and zinc, alongside silver and tungsten. Geologically, the deposit is classified as a hydrothermal vein system hosted within Cretaceous-aged sedimentary rocks, specifically the Chimu Formation sandstones and shales. These minerals were deposited as metal-rich fluids moved through structural fractures and faults caused by tectonic activity. For mineral collectors, Mundo Nuevo is world-famous for producing some of the finest known specimens of hubnerite and augelite. The hubnerite often appears as elongated, bladed crystals with a deep red to black metallic luster, while the augelite presents as sharp, colorless to pale green crystals. Although it remains an active industrial site for lead and silver production, it is most celebrated in geological literature for the exceptional size and aesthetic quality of its rare phosphate and tungstate mineral specimens.
