Hydroxylherderite
specimen number:
1052219
location:
Auburn, Androscoggin Co., Maine, USA
description:
A striking specimen of glassy translucent hydroxylherderite from Auburn, Maine featuring well formed crystals up to 2.3 cm on matrix, offered with its antique early 20th century label as shown at the end of the video. The crystals exhibit excellent clarity and luster with rich phosphorus bearing character typical of the pegmatite environments of Maine which have produced an array of rare phosphate species prized by collectors for over a century. Auburn and the surrounding Oxford County area are part of the historic Maine pegmatite belt where pockets of phosphate minerals including herderite, hydroxylherderite, and associated species were documented and collected by early mineralogists and hobbyists, making this an attractive example of classic American pegmatite mineralogy with strong old world provenance.
