The Taxco mining district, situated in the northern part of Guerrero, Mexico, is one of the oldest and most legendary mining centers in the Western Hemisphere. Geologically, the deposit is characterized by a complex system of hydrothermal veins and replacement bodies hosted within the Taxco Schist and overlying Guerrero Composite Terrane limestones. While Taxco is primarily famous for its silver, it also produces a variety of silicate minerals, including ilvaite, which occurs in skarn-like environments where iron-rich fluids interacted with carbonate rocks. The ilvaite from this region typically appears as black, lustrous, prismatic crystals, often associated with quartz and hedenbergite. Historically, mining at Taxco dates back to the pre-Columbian era, but formal Spanish operations began shortly after the conquest in the 1520s. The district saw several periods of intense activity, most notably in the 18th century under Jose de la Borda and again in the 20th century with the expansion of industrial underground mining by companies like Industrial Minera Mexico. Although large-scale commercial extraction has faced various labor and economic challenges since the early 2000s, the district remains a vital historical and mineralogical landmark in Mexico.
