Broken Hill in New South Wales, Australia, is one of the most famous lead zinc silver mining districts in the world, discovered in 1883 and developed into a major source of these metals. The deposit occurs in metamorphosed sedimentary rocks and has been worked through extensive underground and open pit operations. In the oxidized zones of the ore body, a variety of secondary minerals formed. Iodargyrite, a silver iodide mineral, occurs there as yellow to greenish waxy masses and small crystals formed by the alteration of silver minerals.
