The Chah Khuni mine, located in the historic Anarak mining district of the Isfahan Province in Iran, is an ancient underground mining site renowned for its complex, polymetallic mineralization. Geologically, the deposit is situated within the western portion of the Central-East Iranian Microcontinent, structurally controlled by prominent basement faults where hydrothermal activity intersected Paleozoic metamorphic complexes and ophiolites. The ore bodies formed as a result of multi-stage hydrothermal fluids precipitating a diverse array of lead, copper, zinc, and uncommon chromate minerals within highly oxidized, brecciated zones. Historically, the area represents one of the oldest metallurgy and mining centers on the Iranian plateau, with evidence of intermittent primitive exploitation stretching back thousands of years. Formal exploratory interest and organized mining of the localized lead and copper veins picked up during the late nineteenth century and continued sporadically through the mid-twentieth century, transitioning into a famous source for specialized mineral specimens after commercial mining ceased.

Iranite is a rare triclinic lead copper chromate silicate mineral that serves as the copper-dominant analogue of hemihedrite. It typically forms as small, equant to flattened euhedral crystals or microcrystalline aggregates that exhibit a vitreous luster and a distinct brownish-yellow, honey-brown, or orange coloration. Geologically, it occurs as a secondary mineral within the highly advanced oxidation zones of hydrothermal, lead-bearing ore deposits where chromium and copper were readily available in the circulating groundwaters. First discovered and scientifically described from occurrences in the Anarak district, the mineral typically develops on siliceous or brecciated matrices in close association with other secondary oxidation species such as fornacite, dioptase, wulfenite, and cerussite.
