Sponda Alp - Pizzo Forno, Faido, Leventina, Ticino, Switzerland
description: The Pizzo Forno mountain, situated in the Leventina Valley of the Canton of Ticino, Switzerland, is a classic European alpine mineral locality famous for its exceptional metamorphic mineral assemblages. Geologically, the site is a classic example of high-grade regional metamorphism within the Central Alps, where Mesozoic-age pelitic sedimentary rocks were subjected to intense heat and structural deformation during the Alpine orogeny. This intense metamorphic recrystallization transformed the original shales into highly foliated paragonite and muscovite schists, which host large, idiomorphic, deep blue crystals of kyanite and dark reddish-brown prisms of staurolite, typically found embedded in a white, silvery mica matrix. Historically, there were never large-scale industrial underground shaft mines or commercial quarrying operations on the steep, rugged slopes of the mountain due to the extreme alpine terrain and high elevation. Instead, small-scale mineral extraction and manual rock-splitting were carried out primarily by local crystal hunters and Swiss "strahlers" who targeted exposed outcrops and loose scree fields to supply the European collector market and academic institutions, with documenting and systematic collecting peaking between the mid-1800s and the mid-1900s, though minor seasonal artisanal specimen recovery continues under local regulatory permits through 2026.
A gemmy blue terminated crystal of kyanite 2.0 cm in length embedded up on matrix. In great condition. Classic locality for the species, the quality of this crystal is better than most from here.
