The Mitchell County area in western North Carolina is situated within the Spruce Pine Mining District, a region world-renowned for its diverse pegmatite and metamorphic mineral deposits. Geologically, the kyanite found here occurs within the Blue Ridge Belt, primarily hosted in highly aluminous metamorphic rocks such as the Alarka and Ashe Metamorphic Suites, where high-pressure and moderate-temperature conditions during the Taconic and Acadian orogenies favored its formation. The mineral is typically found as elongated, blade-like crystals in shades of sky blue to deep sapphire, often embedded in a matrix of quartz or mica schist. Historically, mining and quarrying for kyanite in Mitchell County saw its most significant commercial development during the early to mid-20th century, particularly from the 1920s through the 1940s, to provide refractory materials for the furnace and ceramic industries. While many of the larger dedicated kyanite operations, such as those on Burnsville Hill or near the Avery County line, reached their peak during the World War II era, the broader district remains a global leader in high-purity quartz and feldspar production.
