Laurion, located on the Attica Peninsula in Greece, is one of the most significant ancient mining districts in the world, renowned for its complex silver-bearing lead deposits. Geologically, the region features a carbonate-hosted replacement system where hydrothermal fluids deposited galena, sphalerite, and pyrite within marbles and schists during the Miocene epoch. The district is the type locality for laurionite, a rare lead halide mineral that forms as colorless to white orthorhombic crystals, often as a result of the chemical interaction between ancient lead smelting slag and seawater. Historically, mining and quarrying at Laurion date back to the Bronze Age, but the operations reached their legendary peak during the 5th century BCE, providing the silver wealth that funded the Athenian navy and the Golden Age of Greece. After centuries of dormancy, the mines were reopened in 1864 by French and Greek companies to reprocess ancient tailings and extract new ore, with industrial activity continuing until the final closures in 1989.
