Lead

specimen number:
1052867

location:
Langban, Sweden

description:
Crystalline and massive native lead on matrix. Good reference quality example for the Swedish classic.

Langban, located in the Varmland province of Sweden, is a historic mining district with operations dating back to the 15th century for iron and later manganese mining, continuing until its final closure in 1972. Geologically, the deposit is situated within a Paleoproterozoic volcanic-sedimentary sequence that underwent complex high-temperature metamorphism, metasomatism, and structural deformation. Mineralogically, Langban is one of the most famous and mineralogically diverse localities on Earth, serving as the type locality for over 70 distinct mineral species and yielding an extraordinary variety of rare arsenates, silicates, and oxides embedded in crystalline carbonate skarns.
