description: Limonite after pyrite represents one of the most classic and widely recognized pseudomorph types in the mineral kingdom. Geologically, these forms occur when hydrothermal or sedimentary pyrite crystals, composed of iron sulfide, are subjected to near-surface weathering, oxidation, and hydration processes. Mineralogically, the original pyrite is progressively replaced molecule by molecule with various hydrous iron oxides collectively known as limonite, while perfectly retaining the original cubic, pyritohedral, or octahedral crystal habits of the precursor mineral.
A cluster of what were once large sharp cubic pyrite crystals, these now replaced by lustrous limonite. In good condition. This dates to the 1950s and comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video.
