description: The Grand Reef Mine, located in the Aravaipa District of Graham County, Arizona, is a historic underground mining operation with intermittent production dating from the late nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century, focusing primarily on lead, copper, silver, and zinc. Geologically, the deposit is situated within the Basin and Range province, where fault and fissure systems cut through complex regional volcanic and sedimentary host rocks. Hydrothermal activity and subsequent oxidation within these fault zones created a rich secondary mineral environment. The mine is internationally renowned among mineral collectors and researchers for yielding vivid, deep blue crystals of linarite, often found alongside quartz, barite, and a suite of unique lead-bearing halide and sulfate minerals first discovered at the site.
Brilliant blue lustrous sharp blocky slightly translucent crystals of linarite measuring to 0.5 cm in size on matrix with quartz. All of the prominent crystals are in good condition. Quite choice for the species and locality. This was collected by David Shannon in 1992.
