The Huitzuco mining district, located in the northern part of Guerrero, Mexico, is a world-renowned mercury-antimony deposit hosted within the Morelos Formation. Geologically, the ore bodies consist of hydrothermal replacement deposits and pipe-like structures within Cretaceous limestone and dolomite, where mineralizing fluids formed a unique suite of sulfide minerals. The locality is most famous for being the type locality of livingstonite, a rare mercury-antimony sulfide that typically occurs as lead-gray, metallic, needle-like or prismatic crystals often exhibiting a distinct red internal reflection when viewed in thin sections or under bright light. Historically, mining and quarrying at Huitzuco began in the early 1870s following the discovery of rich mercury-bearing ores, with the district becoming one of the most important mercury producers in Mexico during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While industrial-scale production fluctuated over the decades and eventually declined by the mid-1900s, the district remains a critical site for mineralogists studying complex antimony-sulfosalt geochemistry through 2026. Today, Huitzuco is celebrated by collectors for its high-quality specimens of livingstonite, which stand as a testament to the region's rich and specialized geological history.
