The Carles Mine, situated in the Salas municipality of Asturias, Spain, is a significant gold and copper deposit located within the Cantabrian Zone of the Variscan Belt. Geologically, the site is a classic example of a calcic skarn, formed by the intrusion of the Carles granodiorite into Devonian limestones, which resulted in a complex mineral assemblage including magnetite, chalcopyrite, and various arsenides. Lollingite is a notable mineral at this locality, occurring as silver-white metallic grains or crystalline masses often associated with the gold-bearing sulfide stages of the mineralization. Historically, while the region has a long legacy of mining dating back to Roman times, the modern industrial phase of the Carles Mine began in earnest during the late 20th century. Large-scale underground operations were primarily active from the early 2000s until 2015, when the mine was placed on care and maintenance due to market conditions, though it remains a key reference for the study of intrusion-related gold systems in the Iberian Peninsula.
