Magnetite

specimen number:
2262162

location:
Mineville, Essex Co., New York, USA

description:
Classic specimen from New York, a mass of magnetite, this showing several large crystal faces. The specimen dates back to the 1960s.

Mineville, located in the Adirondack Mountains of Essex County, New York, is home to some of the largest and highest-grade magnetite deposits in the United States. Geologically, the ore occurs as massive, titaniferous-poor magnetite bodies hosted within complexly folded Precambrian gneisses, specifically the Lyon Mountain Gneiss, where mineralization formed through hydrothermal processes or magmatic segregation. Historically, mining and quarrying at Mineville began in the early 1800s, with large-scale industrial operations taking hold by the mid-19th century under companies like Witherbee, Sherman and Co. and later Republic Steel. The district reached its peak during the mid-20th century, particularly during World War II, when its high-purity iron ore was a critical strategic resource for the American steel industry. Production continued through the 1960s, but economic challenges and the availability of cheaper foreign ore led to the closure of the major underground mines by 1971.
