The Iron Springs mining district, situated in Iron County near Cedar City in southwestern Utah, was a major open-pit iron ore producing region characterized by extensive quarrying and surface mining operations. Geologically, the district features a series of massive contact-metasomatic iron deposits formed during the Miocene epoch when laccoliths of quartz monzonite porphyry intruded into Paleozoic sedimentary sequences, particularly the Homestake Limestone member of the Carmel Formation. High-temperature hydrothermal fluids expelled from the cooling intrusive magmas replaced the adjacent limestones, precipitating massive bodies of high-grade magnetite and hematite ore along with localized crystals of apatite, calcite, and barite within open fractures and replacement fronts. Historically, the deposits were discovered by Mormon pioneers in 1849, leading to the establishment of the early Deseret Iron Company which attempted localized smelting in the 1850s, though large-scale commercial open-pit mining did not expand dramatically until the arrival of regional railroad connections in 1923. Major industrial extraction surged mid-century under corporate entities like the Columbia Iron Mining Company and Utah Construction Company to supply iron ore to the Geneva Steel plant near Provo, maintaining heavy production through multiple large pits until changing global steel markets and localized ore depletion caused a severe downturn in the 1980s. While corporate mining ceased for extended periods, intermittent production revived briefly in the early twenty-first century, operating under various entities until the final processing and mining activities at the remaining open pits were systematically wound down and halted by 2014.
