Magnetite after Hematite with Quartz

specimen number:
9892043

location:
Jinlong Hill, Longchuan Co., Heyuan, Guangdong, China

description:
Rosettes of what were once crystals of hematite, these now replaced by magnetite, in a cluster with minor quartz. This is in good condition for one of these with just slight micro-damage present.

Jinlong Hill in Longchuan County, Heyuan, Guangdong Province, China, is a regional mineral locality that gained prominence among collectors primarily for producing exceptional specimens of iron-oxide minerals and quartz. Operating primarily as a localized source for mineral specimens rather than a major industrial metal mine, it does not have a formal historical record of industrial opening and closing dates, but modern mineral collecting from this area expanded significantly in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Geologically, the area features hydrothermal vein systems traversing regional metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, rich in iron-bearing fluids that produced striking crystal associations.

Among mineralogists, pseudomorphs involving iron oxides at such localities are of high scientific interest. While hematite pseudomorphs after magnetite are common (historically termed martite), the reverse alteration or related hydrothermal replacements (sometimes called mushketovite when magnetite replaces hematite or vice versa) involve redox and fluid-mediated transformations. In these pseudomorphic events, an initial crystal habit (such as tabular or iron-rose hematite) is chemically altered by hydrothermal solutions, changing the internal crystal lattice and composition while preserving the external morphological form of the precursor mineral.
