Magnetite with Chalcopyrite

specimen number:
2072221

location:
Aggeneys, Northern Cape, South Africa

description:
Bright lustrous sharp crystals of magnetite embedded up on a chalcopyrite matrix. Neat locality example for the species.

The Aggeneys district, located in the remote Namaqualand region of the Northern Cape, South Africa, is home to some of the world's largest sediment-hosted base metal deposits. Geologically, these ores are part of the Aggeneys-Gamsberg Ore District within the Mesoproterozoic Namaqua Metamorphic Complex, where massive sulfide layers of lead, zinc, copper, and silver are hosted in highly deformed metamorphic rocks such as schists and quartzites. The mineralization is interpreted as a broken-up, exhalative sedimentary system that underwent intense structural folding. Historically, while the presence of minerals was known earlier, significant exploration by Phelps Dodge in the 1970s led to the development of the Black Mountain Mine, which commenced underground operations in 1980. The district expanded with the opening of the massive Gamsberg open-pit zinc mine in 2018. These mines have operated continuously through the late 20th century into the present day, with ownership transitioning to Vedanta Resources, making Aggeneys a critical industrial hub for the global supply of zinc and lead concentrates.
