Magnetite with Chalcopyrite
specimen number:
2072312
location:
Aggeneys, Northern Cape, South Africa
description: The Aggeneys mining area, located in the Namaqualand region of the Northern Cape, South Africa, is situated within the Proterozoic Namaqua Metamorphic Complex. Geologically, the deposit consists of highly deformed and metamorphosed sedimentary rocks known as the Aggeneys Subgroup, which hosts world-class stratiform base metal deposits rich in lead, zinc, copper, and silver. These ores are interpreted as SEDEX (sedimentary exhalative) deposits that underwent intense tectonic folding and pressure, resulting in the complex mineral structures found today at sites like Black Mountain and Gamsberg. Historically, the potential for mining and quarrying in the area was first identified in the late 1920s, but large-scale industrial operations did not commence until the late 1970s following extensive exploration by Phelps Dodge. The Black Mountain Mine began formal production in 1980, and the district has seen continuous expansion through the early 21st century, including the development of the massive Gamsberg zinc project which started production around 2018. As of 2026, Aggeneys remains one of the most significant base metal producers in the world, serving as a vital economic hub for the arid Northern Cape province.
Lustrous crystals of magnetite measuring to 1.2 cm in size on matrix with chalcopyrite. Interesting locality example for the species.
