Nizhnii Tagil in the Ural Mountains of Russia is part of a historic mining region that became famous in the 18th and 19th centuries for its rich copper deposits and ornamental stone production. The deposits are associated with hydrothermal mineralization in igneous and metamorphic rocks, where copper ores were mined extensively to support early Russian industry. The area is especially well known for its malachite, which occurs as vivid green banded masses and botryoidal forms formed in the oxidized zones of copper deposits. Much of the finest malachite from Nizhnii Tagil was recovered during the 18th and 19th centuries and was used for decorative objects, architectural panels, and inlays in imperial Russian buildings. Specimens from this locality are considered classic and quite old, and they remain highly valued for their rich color, pattern, and historical significance.
