Mining at Bisbee, Arizona began in the 1880s after the discovery of rich copper deposits in the Mule Mountains. The district became one of the most productive copper mining areas in the United States, with large underground operations extracting copper along with silver, gold, lead, and zinc. Major mines such as the Copper Queen and the Lavender Pit helped establish Bisbee as an important mining center. The district is also famous among mineral collectors for specimens such as azurite, malachite, and wulfenite from the oxidized zones of the deposits.
