Bisbee, Arizona, is one of the most famous historic copper mining districts in the United States, with mining beginning in the 1880s after the discovery of rich copper deposits in the Mule Mountains. Numerous underground mines and shafts were developed as the district expanded under companies such as the Copper Queen Mining Company and later Phelps Dodge. The Czar Shaft was one of the important shafts in the Bisbee district, providing access to underground workings and aiding in ventilation and ore removal. Specimens from the Bisbee mines are highly valued by collectors, especially minerals such as azurite, malachite, cuprite, and many rare secondary copper minerals formed in the oxidized zones of the deposit.
