The Kakanda mining region, located in the Lualaba Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is situated within the Central African Copperbelt, a world-class sediment-hosted stratiform copper-cobalt district. The local geology is characterized by Proterozoic sedimentary sequences of the Katanga Supergroup, where complex tectonic folding and faulting created favorable structural traps for hydrothermal mineralization. Copper and cobalt minerals, including malachite, heterogenite, and various silicates, occur within these deformed rock units. Mining activities in Kakanda date back to the colonial era, with systematic exploitation of its copper and cobalt reserves increasing during the twentieth century. While the site remains important for its industrial mineral output, it is also recognized by mineral collectors for producing various secondary copper minerals, such as notable specimens of malachite and associated pseudomorphs, which were recovered during open-pit mining operations.
