Kolwezi, located in the Lualaba Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is one of the most prolific copper and cobalt mining districts in the world, with history and industrial scale mining operations expanding rapidly under Belgian colonial administration starting in the early 20th century, particularly through companies like Union Miniere du Haut Katanga. Geologically, the area sits within the famous Central African Copperbelt, characterized by Neoproterozoic sedimentary rocks of the Katanga Supergroup where massive stratiform and supergene ore deposits formed through complex basin evolution, fluid migration, and subsequent weathering. This unique geological setting has yielded not only immense industrial metal wealth, but also some of the most spectacular, world-renowned secondary mineral specimens known to mineralogy.
