Malachite after azurite from Bisbee, Arizona represents a classic pseudomorph formed in the oxidized zones of the districts copper deposits. At Bisbee, which was one of the most important copper producing camps in the United States from the late 19th century through the mid 20th century, primary copper sulfides altered near the surface to form secondary minerals including azurite and malachite. In some cases the original blue azurite crystals were chemically replaced by green malachite while preserving their crystal shape, creating sharp and well defined pseudomorphs. Specimens from Bisbee are highly prized by collectors for their vivid color contrast and their association with one of Arizonas most historic mining districts.
