Mining in Bisbee, Arizona began in the late 1870s following the discovery of rich copper deposits in the Mule Mountains, quickly transforming the area into one of the most important mining districts in the United States. Early operations focused on high grade ore extracted from underground workings, with major companies such as the Copper Queen Mining Company driving development. By the early 20th century, Bisbee had become a leading producer of copper, along with gold, silver, lead, and zinc. Mining methods later expanded to include large scale open pit operations such as the Lavender Pit. The district was also famous for its remarkable mineral diversity, producing world class specimens of azurite, malachite, and many rare secondary minerals. Mining activity declined in the late 20th century as ore reserves were depleted and economic conditions changed, eventually leading to the closure of major operations.

Pseudomorphs are minerals that have replaced an earlier mineral while preserving the original external crystal form, meaning the specimen retains the shape of one mineral but has the composition of another. A well known example from Bisbee is malachite after azurite, where the original azurite crystals were chemically altered and replaced by malachite over time. This process occurs in the oxidized zones of copper deposits, where changing chemical conditions cause one mineral to dissolve and another to form in its place. In these specimens, the deep blue azurite is replaced by green malachite, but the crystal shape remains unchanged, creating striking examples that are highly valued by collectors for both their beauty and their geological significance.
