Bisbee, Arizona, is one of the most famous historic copper mining districts in the United States, with mining beginning in the 1880s after rich copper deposits were discovered in the Mule Mountains. Numerous underground workings and shafts were developed as the mines expanded. The Dallas Shaft was one of the important access and ventilation shafts in the district and served several of the underground workings operated by the Copper Queen Mining Company. Minerals from the Bisbee district are highly prized by collectors, including azurite, malachite, cuprite, and many rare secondary copper minerals formed in the oxidized zones of the ore bodies.
