Malachite with Quartz
specimen number:
9506214
location:
Mindingi mine, Kambove, Haut-Katanga, DR Congo
description: Velvety green botryoidal chatoyant crystallized malachite across the top of this crystallized quartz matrix. The quartz crystals measure to 3.0 cm in size, the specimen is in great condition. The Mindingi Mine, located near Kambove in the Haut-Katanga Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, sits within the heart of the prolific Central African Copperbelt. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within Neoproterozoic sedimentary sequences of the Katanga Supergroup, where intense tectonic activity and fluid circulation concentrated rich copper and cobalt ores within fractured carbonate and shale units. Historically, the area has been shaped by both large-scale colonial exploration under Belgian rule and subsequent generations of artisanal and small-scale mining operations. Mineralogically, the locality is celebrated by collectors for yielding superb secondary copper specimens, particularly fine associations of fibrous malachite and crystallized quartz.
