Manganite

specimen number:
1052564

location:
Ilfeld, Harztor, Nordhausen, Thuringia, Germany

description:
A classic German specimen with bright lustrous black prismatic crystals of manganite measuring to 4.0 cm in length coming off matrix. Typical of these there is slight damage present as seen. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video and was originally obtained in 1908.

The Harz Mountains of Germany constitute one of Europe's most storied mining regions, featuring a complex geological framework of Paleozoic sedimentary and volcanic rocks heavily influenced by Variscan folding and granite intrusions. The district is characterized by extensive hydrothermal vein systems, particularly in the Upper Harz and around Ilfeld, where mineralizing fluids deposited lead, zinc, silver, and manganese. Historically, mining activity in the Harz began more than a thousand years ago, with the Rammelsberg deposit near Goslar operating almost continuously from 968 until 1988. The region is internationally celebrated for producing world-class manganite specimens, especially from the iron and manganese mines near Ilfeld. These specimens are considered the finest of the species, featuring lustrous, jet-black, deeply striated prismatic crystals that often form spectacular clusters. Although industrial-scale mining has largely ceased, the Harz Mountains remain a primary reference site for mineralogists due to the diversity of species found there and the profound impact the region had on early mining technology and geological science.
