Manganosite is a rare manganese oxide mineral that typically occurs as green to dark green crystalline masses, although fresh surfaces may alter quickly to black due to oxidation. It forms under high temperature conditions in metamorphosed manganese rich deposits. One of the classic localities for manganosite is Franklin, New Jersey, a world famous mineral site known for its unique assemblage of manganese minerals. At Franklin, manganosite is found in association with minerals such as zincite, willemite, and franklinite, often occurring in granular or massive forms within the ore body. Because manganosite is unstable in the presence of air and moisture, well preserved specimens are relatively uncommon, making it an important and sought after mineral for collectors interested in the Franklin deposit.
