description: The Mpwapwa District, located within the Dodoma Region of central Tanzania, is a highly regarded mineral locality recognized for producing sharply crystallized, transparent to translucent specimens of marialite, the sodium chloride rich end member of the scapolite solid solution series. Geologically, these unique deposits are situated within the Proterozoic-age Mozambique Orogenic Belt, featuring extensive beds of deeply buried dolomitic marbles, amphibolites, and calc-silicate granulites that were subjected to high-grade regional metamorphism and subsequent metasomatic alteration. During these intense structural developments, highly pressurized, halogen-bearing hydrothermal fluids rich in sodium and chlorine permeated the fractured silicate-rich carbonate strata, triggering the localized crystallization of well-formed, tetragonal marialite prisms within skarn-like alteration zones and metamorphic cavities alongside diopside, phlogopite mica, and albite. Historically, localized prospecting and surface extraction in the rugged hills around Mpwapwa began during the mid-to-late twentieth century, as regional herders and independent prospectors identified a wide variety of colored gemstones, though targeted excavations for gem-grade and specimen-grade scapolite group minerals expanded more noticeably during the 1980s and 1990s following broader international interest in East African metamorphic geology.
