This environment created extensive skarn deposits rich in industrial and rare-earth minerals, including magnetite, molybdenite, and large crystals of phlogopite and apatite. Historically, mining and quarrying in Litchfield began in the late 19th century, with a focus on mica and iron ore to support regional industrialization. The most notable period of activity occurred from the 1880s through the mid-20th century, with a resurgence in the 1950s during the uranium exploration boom, where several sites were investigated for radioactive minerals like uraninite and thorianite.
