The Godsend claim, located near Lake George within the famous Crystal Peak pegmatite district spanning Teller and Park counties in Colorado, is celebrated for producing some of the largest and most exceptional smoky quartz crystals ever discovered in North America. Geologically, the site is situated within the billion-year-old Pikes Peak batholith. The mineralization occurs inside miarolitic cavities, which are gas-formed crystal pockets within zoned pegmatite dikes. These dikes feature an outer border of sugary aplite grading into graphic granite that encloses core zones containing massive quartz and microcline feldspar. Historically, while the broader Lake George region has been actively prospected for amazonite and smoky quartz since the 1870s, the Godsend claim specifically rose to prominence when local prospector Richard Fretterd opened a series of extraordinarily productive crystal-bearing pockets there starting in 2002.
