Millerite with Chalcopyrite

specimen number:
2262305

location:
Bellmunt del Priorat, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain

description:
Golden needle like crystals of millerite to 0.5 cm in length on matrix with crystalline chalcopyrite. Excellent locality example for the species. The specimen comes with a previous collection data card giving an original acquisition date in 1962.

The Bellmunt mining district, situated near Priorat in Catalonia, Spain, was a highly significant Mediterranean source of lead and silver ores. Geologically, the deposit consists of complex hydrothermal vein networks cutting through highly folded Paleozoic-age Carboniferous slates and quartzites, which were heavily fractured during the Variscan orogeny. Ascending low-temperature hydrothermal fluids filled these fault fissures, precipitating dense deposits of high-grade argentiferous galena along with minor sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and barite, hosted within a predominantly calcite and quartz gangue. Historically, surface quarrying and primitive underground extraction for lead date back to antiquity, with documented operations by the Romans and intermittent activity through the medieval period. Large-scale industrial underground shaft mining accelerated rapidly after 1860, eventually centralizing under the major corporate management of Minas del Priorato SA in the early twentieth century. Famous operations like the Eugenia mine utilized advanced vertical shafts and processing mills to supply heavy industries with metallic lead, operating continuously through the Spanish Civil War and peaking in production during the mid-twentieth century. Due to the gradual exhaustion of the deepest ore bodies, high operational costs, and intense competition from international markets, corporate extraction steadily contracted after the 1960s, culminating in the permanent cessation of all commercial mining operations in the Bellmunt sector in 1972.
