description: The Ilimaussaq Complex in southern Greenland is a famous alkaline intrusive complex known for its highly unusual mineralogy and geochemistry. Formed during the Proterozoic, the complex consists mainly of nepheline syenite and related rocks that are enriched in rare elements such as sodium, zirconium, and rare earth elements. This unique chemical environment has produced an extraordinary diversity of rare minerals, many of which are found in only a few localities worldwide. Minerals such as eudialyte, arfvedsonite, and sodalite are characteristic of the complex, and the layered and evolved nature of the intrusion has created distinct mineral zones. Ilimaussaq is considered one of the most important localities for the study of alkaline igneous processes and rare element mineral formation. Pseudomorphs are minerals that have replaced an earlier mineral while preserving the original external form of the crystal. In the case of monazite Ce after vitusite from the Ilimaussaq Complex, the original vitusite crystals were chemically altered and replaced by monazite Ce during later stages of mineralization. This process occurs when changing chemical conditions cause one mineral to become unstable and dissolve, while another mineral precipitates in its place, maintaining the original crystal shape. These pseudomorphs are of particular interest because they preserve the morphology of vitusite while representing a different mineral composition, providing insight into the sequence of mineral formation and alteration within the complex.
What was once crystalline vitusite across matrix and now replaced by monazite-Ce. The specimen comes with a previous label from the University of Copenhagen as shown at the end of the video.
