While not the prettiest thing in the world, this is an excellent example for the species with very large crystals, these measuring to 5.0 cm in height. In great condition. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video and dates to 1912. I assume that this has been etched out of enclosing calcite.

The locality of Creste di Fels, situated above Predazzo in the Val di Fiemme, Italy, is a world-renowned geological site for the rare calcium magnesium silicate mineral monticellite. Geologically, the area represents a classic contact metamorphic zone where Triassic monzonitic and granitic magmas intruded into the Anisian-age Werfen and Contrin limestone formations. This intense thermal interaction transformed the sedimentary rock into a specialized skarn, facilitating the growth of well-formed, often lustrous crystals of monticellite associated with vesuvianite, gehlenite, and spinel. Historically, the site gained scientific prominence in the early 19th century as a key battlefield for the Neptunism versus Plutonism debates, attracting famous geologists like Leopold von Buch and Alexander von Humboldt. Mining and quarrying activity at Creste di Fels and the surrounding Predazzo complex peaked between the 1820s and the early 20th century, primarily for research and mineral specimen extraction rather than large-scale industrial use. Today, the locality is protected as part of a UNESCO World Heritage region, and through 2026, it remains an essential site for studying the complex mineralogy of igneous-carbonate contacts.
