description: Terlingua, located in the remote Big Bend region of Brewster County, Texas, was once the center of a major mercury mining industry in the United States. Geologically, the district is situated within a complex structural zone where Tertiary-aged volcanic activity and tectonic uplift forced mercury-rich hydrothermal fluids into the surrounding Cretaceous-aged limestone and shale. The ore, primarily cinnabar, was deposited along faults, solution cavities, and contact zones within the Santa Elena Limestone. Mining began in the mid-1880s after the discovery of red cinnabar outcrops, and the district saw its greatest expansion under the Chisos Mining Company starting in 1903. At its peak during World War I, Terlingua was a leading producer of quicksilver, supporting a thriving desert community. However, falling prices and ore depletion led to a steady decline, and most major operations ceased by the end of World War II in 1946. Today, the area is a famous ghost town and a legendary site for mineral collectors seeking rare mercury species. Montroydite is an extremely rare mercury oxide mineral that was first discovered in the Terlingua district. It typically forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidized zones of mercury deposits, created through the alteration of primary cinnabar. The mineral is prized by collectors for its distinct appearance, often forming as elongated, needle-like crystals or as tiny, twisted, worm-like forms known as vermiform habits. It possesses a brilliant, adamantine to metallic luster and its color ranges from a deep orange-red to a dark brownish-red. Despite its striking appearance, montroydite is quite soft and brittle, and its crystals are usually very small, often requiring magnification to appreciate their complex structure. In the mines of Terlingua, it was frequently found in association with other rare secondary mercury minerals like terlinguaite and eglestonite, making it a hallmark species for this unique desert locality.
