description: The Sierra Gorda district, located within the hyper-arid core of the Atacama Desert in the Antofagasta Region of northern Chile, is a historic mining center recognized for its significant porphyry copper-molybdenum and associated gold deposits. Geologically, the mineralization is hosted within Mesozoic volcanic and intrusive rock sequences that were heavily fractured and altered by Upper Cretaceous to Eocene igneous plutons, forming extensive hydrothermal vein networks and breccia pipes rich in chalcopyrite, pyrite, and molybdenite. Due to the extreme desert environment, deep supergene weathering and oxidation zones developed, creating an exceptionally diverse suite of secondary copper, lead, iron, and iodine minerals. Localized surface mining and exploration by independent prospectors began in the late nineteenth century, around the 1870s and 1880s, before expanding into mechanized underground operations for copper and silver during the early twentieth century. These early underground workings operated sporadically until mid-century, paving the way for massive, modern open-pit operations that commenced large-scale commercial extraction in 2014. Natrojarosite is a hydrous sodium iron sulfate mineral that crystallizes in the trigonal system, belonging to the widespread alunite supergroup. Geologically, it forms as a secondary mineral in the highly acidic, oxidized zones of iron-bearing sulfide ore deposits, typically developing through the weathering of primary minerals like pyrite or chalcopyrite in the presence of sodium-rich fluids. The mineral characteristically occurs as fine-grained, earthy coatings, compact nodular masses, or minute platy crystals that display a distinctive yellowish-brown to amber-yellow coloration and a vitreous to resinous luster. In arid mining environments like Sierra Gorda, natrojarosite serves as a critical geomineralogical indicator of highly acidic, low-temperature supergene alteration pathways and localized fluid evaporation within the weathering profile.
